Pirzada Asjal Alvi is known by his takhallus “Sukhan”. A Computer Science postgraduate at NUST, he is deeply influenced by Karachi’s Mushaira circuit. His father and grandfathers, skilled in Urdu, Persian, and Arabic, kindled his passion while Saleem Ahmad and Maulvi Muhammad Yahya Tanha inspired him to take their mantle and reach new heights. Qawwali, Urs celebrations, and migration tales also shape his work. Influenced by poets like Daagh, Kaleem Aajiz, Habib Jalib, Suroor Barabankvi, Khumar Barabankvi, and Pirzada Qasim, he imbibes their ideas in his work. He explores gore and mystery fiction when he writes in English. He has featured in Teen Vogue and BBC World.
Urdu, a language both resilient and adaptable, assimilates words from diverse sources as its own. Thus, while finding suitable equivalents may not be burdensome, maintaining the aesthetic qualities of poetic expression is crucial.
