We often complain about being far behind the development we deserve. Yet development, the process in which someone or something grows or changes and becomes more advanced, is sometimes achieved at the expense of erasing the familiarity once deeply known, like a street where your home was located, now completely unrecognizable, leaving behind a quiet sense of loss.

Nuzhat Nisar is a Karachi-based Urdu writer, editor, and translator. Passionate about promoting Urdu through literary translation, she advocates for the language’s growth and accessibility. Her forthcoming books include a collection of translated short stories by Turkish writer Sabahattin Ali, and an Urdu translation of the novel Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal. Her own poetry, prose, and translated works have been published or are forthcoming in literary magazines Lakeer Magazine, Rowayat, and Indus Auguries.
